Essays due Monday, February 11

Period 1-
What does it mean to be “alive”? Is HAL alive? Is it unethical to build a machine that has feelings? What responsibilities are involved in the creation of such a machine? Is shutting it down tantamount to murder? Can HAL be held accountable for Poole’s death?


Periods 2 and 3-
“Now, though there was no parent to let fall a heavy hand, Maurice still felt the unease of wrongdoing. At the back of his mind formed the uncertain outlines of an excuse. He muttered something about a swim and broke into a trot.” (60)

A) What does this quote mean?
B) Is morality learned,or are we born with it?
